php session save path permission denied

seems an update in plesk overnight (twice in the last few weeks) has cocked up the php session_save_path: no websites were able to write any sessions, so nothing added to baskets… angry customers…

ahem.

not sure whether i’m blaming plesk just yet, i’m investigating. but the problem in all error logs is:
mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/var/lib/php/session) in Unknown on line 0, …
looking at /var/lib/php/session:
cd /var/lib/php
ll
drwxrwx—. 2 root root 208896 Feb 23 19:46 session
these permissions needs sorting, so others can read and write the directory, with:
chmod o+rw session
ll
drwxr-xrwx. 2 root root 208896 Feb 23 19:48 session
apache can now write sessions again. hurrah. tea time.
